Title: Album Launch Party - Friday 10th September @ The Luminaire
Post by: Simon on July 29, 2010, 10:45:17 AM
Boys and girls

Tinyfish are proud to announce (officially) that the launch party for our new album The Big Red Spark, will take place at The Luminaire in Kilburn, North London on Friday the 10th of September courtesy of those magificent chaps at the Classic Rock Society.

The new album will be publicly available for the very first time at this show and in addition to the songs you may have already heard on One Night On Fire live album and DVD, we will also be debuting a significant proportion of new material that features on the new album.

Nellie will also be making chocolate cake I hear

But the good news doesn't end there folks. We've managed to secure as support for the evening the magnificent Dec Burke and his brilliant new band Destroy All Monsters. We love Dec and his music to bits and honestly believe that he's one of Prog's brightest stars right now.

Looking forward to seeing you all down there. You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll try to dance and break your ankles in the attempt. It's prog for Cliff's sake!  ;D

Splendid, this news is a total surprise to me ;D

Simon, will I be able to bring The Spoff with me? The Lumiere web site says "18 and over only unless specified" - is this something I'm best checking with Miles?

If we can get him in then Yvette wants to come too, bless her.

I would hope (and love) to see Spoff attend sir. If memory serves, I spotted a few younger ladies and gents at the TN gig but I think it might indeed be wise to check with Miles to obtain some clarification.

It would be nice to see all of the Clan Elliot in attendance.

Looks like they are £10 if you buy them in advance or £12 at the door according to the Luminaire's website (http://www.theluminaire.co.uk/live-music/2010/September/1271/TINYFISH) and there is a link to where you can buy them online (http://www.wegottickets.com/event/88867).

Tickets for this gig are now on sale form the CRS.

Prices are £8 to CRS members in advance, £10 non-members advance (subject to booking fee), £12 on the door.

http://www.classicrocksociety.co.uk/

The good news is, we can let under 18's in as long as they are accompanied by a responsible adult.

Anybody know one?   ;D

I could hear quite a lot of grown-ups talking very loudly during both Dec Burke and Black Bonzo at the Luminaire...I don't think they should be allowed in.
The CRS could do a better job of policing that...

I think we should stage a mission to kidnap Rog, bring him to the UK in time for the Tinyfish launch gig, then keep him under the stairs only letting him out for Summer's End. Then we might let him go home, if he hasn't proved to be very useful to us :)

I can, but I have to do it in the medium of mime plagarism.

IAN: What do you think?
DEREK: Is this the test pressing?
IAN: No, this is it, yes, thatís right...
DAVID: This is ďThe Big Red SparkĒ by Tinyfish....
IAN: Thatís ďThe Big Red SparkĒ thatís, thatís the jacket cover, itís going out across the country in every store.
DAVID: This is the compromise we made...this is the compromise you made?
IAN: Yes.
DEREK: Is it going to say anything here, or here along the spine?
DAVID: Itís not going to say anything?
IAN: No, itís not going to say anything.
NIGEL: Itís going to be like this, all black...with red and white bits
IAN: No, itís going to be that simple, beautiful, classic!
?: Does look a little bit like, you know, black leather...with red and white bits
DEREK: You can see yourself in... both sides.
DAVID: I feel so bad, I feel so bad about this...
NIGEL: Itís like a black mirror, with red and white bits.
DAVID: Well, I think it looks like death...it looks like mourning. I mean it looks...
IAN: David, David, every, every movie, in every cinema is about death; death sells!
NIGEL: I think heís right, there is something about this, thatís thatís so black with red and white bits, itís like; ďHow much more black with red and white bits could
this be?Ē and the answer is: ďNone, none... more black with red and white bits.Ē
DAVID: I think, like youíre, like rationalizing this whole thing like into something you did on on purpose. I think
weíre stuck with a very, very clever and a very, and a very superb looking album, this is awe inspiring.
NIGEL: David!
DAVID: This is something you wear around your arm, you donít put this in your fucking CD player.
NIGEL: David, itís a choice.
IAN: I frankly think that this is the turning point, okay? I think, I think this is...weíre on our way now.
NIGEL: I agree, I agree...
IAN: Itís time, time to kick arse!

Cheers.

Rick

Sad facts about Rick #46: He carries a copy of the Spinal Tap script on a memory stick because getting the quote right matters (with red and white bits).

I like it - very nice indeed.  I have ordered my tickets from the CRS for pick up at the venue.  I like the CRS shop - straight forward to use.  No booking fee - 50p extra to mail the tickets; nothing extra for pick up at the door.  Perfect.

Damn those CRS guys and their connections with Mr Progrock-Records.

I have connections with neither the inestimable Mr. Robinson nor the CRS, but I can indeed confirm that The Big Red Spark is fantabulous. You've heard a third of it before, of course, in different versions, but the final album take of, for example, Wide Awake At Midnight (which is a prog classic in the making, quite honestly) raises the bar as high as it goes. It's always a difficult call when the band are your mates, but I've tried to be critical (cuz Simon asked me to be) and apart from some matters of detail which got fixed in the final mix anyway there's nothing to fault.

Last year The Underfall Yard, this year The Big Red Spark. That's the sort of quality we're talking about.

It's prog for Cliff's sake!  ;D

Should see you there guys :)

Fishheads have been flyered.

I think we may have embarrassed some guy from Reading (who is not Rob) into coming.  He was looking at some flyers Peter was holding, so I said "he looks interested, give him a flyer".  "I was just bored", he said, but we foisted one upon him anyway, because we do not take boredom as a good excuse.  "Who are Tinyfish ? I've never heard of them", he says.  "You're standing next to their bassist", says I.  "Oh", says he, suitably chastened  ;D

If anyone turns up looking a bit spacey they have probably wandered in from the Here & Now gig - sadly the numbers there tonight meant it did not take me long to carpet-flyer the place.

I did get to hear some clips coming over the sound system.  Sounds passable.

To be honest I not sure what to make of Hear & Now. The best description I can come up with is Prog Reggae.

I've not been to the luminaire but have been to another venue not far from it,  I got the Jubilee line to Kilburn, it then a short walk to the Luminaire. I caught a night bus back into London after the gig from what I remember there were plenty of buses.  Engineering works on the tube tends to take place on Saturday's and Sunday's so you should be ok on a Friday night

When I used to live in Worcester and stayed overnight a few times for London gigs I stayed at the Charlotte Guest House in West Hampstead. It's quite close to Kilburn, certainly walkable if you know where you are going. They are reasonably priced and I would certainly use them again. Now I live in Ipswich I drive to Newbury Park and often end up getting the last or next to last central line tube back out.

Cheers

I must admit to a certain amount of concern about how to get from here (where I am right now) to Kilburn on a Friday night.  And also what time I need to leave to get there in time.

It is indeed and entirely of my own doing I should have booked my travel and accommodation ages ago instead I couldn't afford to do it at the end of last month and had to wait till I got paid this week but now with it being last minute everything is costing more than I'd like to spend on an overnight stay in London and I may or may not be going to Valencia in November so potentially need to save for that . I'm waiting to hear back from a website about  having photo access for the last MotoGP race of the season.

In unrelated breaking news

"Tinyfish maltesered off stage
Posted Thu 2 Sep 2010 by Ben Arnold in Pop Gossip

Tinyfish were maltesered off stage in London last night after yet more issues with Simon Godfrey's timekeeping.

The beleaguered rock band hit the stage more than a minute late at the pub round the corner from The O2, much to the chagrin of their expectant fans.

Beginning the set with 'Welcome To The Jungle', which no-one actually realised was one of their songs, they stopped shortly into the track after maltesers bombarded the stage.

Addressing the angry crowd, Godfrey said: "Alright, here's the deal: one more malteser, we go home. It's up to you.

"We would like to stay. Do you want us to stay? We want to stay, we want to have some fun. If you don't want to have fun all you've got to do is let us know - we've got no problem - and we'll go on our way."

But after three more tracks, the band left the stage, after which a member of staff was forced to take to the microphone to calm jeering fans stressing that they were trying to get Godfrey to return, and pleading: "I would ask you to refrain from throwing items at him."

The band also appeared on stage a minute late last weekend at venues in the vicinity of the Reading and Leeds Festivals."

I know both Mike and Bo, our own resident photographers, try their very best and are very good at not getting in the way - I just hope everyone else with a camera doesn't think that recording the event is more important than being at it.

And if you have a loud shutter - please don't take photos in the quiet bits.

The couple of press guys that Pallas brought down with them to The peel earlier this year very nearly got an elbow in the ribs from poking their lenses over my shoulder.

I'm sure that prog is the most documented genre of the 21st century.

I know it's my own bete-noir and therefore my problem, but there are a couple of gigs I've been to which have been pretty much ruined by a throng of people more interested in getting 500 shots than watching the gig.

I'll shut up now.

I couldn't agree more, UB, and I've ranted right here about this before too - nobody seemed to agree with me, mind you! I don't mind as long as people don't barge right in front of me or distract me from the gig with their little LCD screens...

Well said UB I'm always very conscious of the people around me when I'm taking photos and try not to get in anybody's way (pretty easy to really when your my size) I have cringed a few times when I hear my shutter during quiet bits so do try not to take photos in obviously quiet moments during a set.

When I've had photo access for bigger gigs then it tends to be 3 songs and that's it.  I really should try and enforce this rule on myself at gigs where there is no such rule, but I admit I do tend to get carried away and end up with far too many photos.

I was going to type more but I've just realised the time and I need to catch a bus.

I'm with Mike. I don't even move around much (or at all during busy shows such as Leamington Spa). Even when there is space to move about easily I rarely make more than a single visit to another vantage point before returning to my previous spot. Sometimes I miss out on chances to get great shots (eg Jim behind the pillar most of the time at Leamington Spa, notice the cropping on my flickr pages) but that is better than annoying others with constant dashing about.

That said, I hope it won't be a problem bringing my SLR next Friday?

Cheers

Rick

I know previously the CRS used to have a rule at their gigs about only CRS members were aloud to bring SLR cameras into their gigs, is this still in effect and apply to this gig?

I think this is more of a guide than a rule. I have never been challenged, but as I am ninja (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8MkpU03Vd8) nobody notices me anyway.

The Liminaire have the following rules:

"We don't mind photographers shooting the bands, but the bands might. You should contact them in advance, or speak to them on the night. We don't do any of that three-songs-and-you're-out-carry-on here, but we do ask that you use common sense. If you're tall and/or carrying a large camera with a huge flash gun, and it's busy, you're going to get in the way of people who've paid to watch the band. Just shoot the first three songs, then step aside."

Normally there isn't a tube strike until you want to get back.

I have to say that Kilburn is awful to get to by public transport.  In the end I decided to drive in.  I would have preferred to have gone in by train & tube, but I don't know what time it'll finish and I don't want to miss the last train back.

No Tube strike tomorrow. Nearest Tube station is Kilburn, on the Jubilee line, which is generally an excellent service.

The last gig I was at there was Black Bonzo, which I believe finished in enough time for Robert to get home?

We have just been rehearsing all day, and Leon does indeed know when and where he's supposed to be tomorrow, or were you talking about your red tee? He does not know where it is, as for when, that's a far too deep a question to ask a drummer.

Arrival time has yet to be decided because t'other half hates the tube and wants to use it when it is least busy. Assuming we do arrive at a sensibly early time (say, 18:30) then Nandos may well be visited.
Clothing doesn't come in colours like 'red' for me... but I have something even better. You'll see tomorrow.

Cheers

Gentlemen of Tinyfish,

Have a great evening on Friday night. I hope you're all ruddy proud of The BRS as it's a great piece of work. Though we won't be there tomorrow night (the last flight of the day is in 45 minutes from here, so I've missed check-in), Erica & I will be there in spirit, laughing at the on stage banter between Simon & Leon, nodding along with the rumbling bass of Paul, marvelling at the oration of Rob and thinking that's my mate Jim up there, what a jolly fine guitarist he turned out to be and an even better friend!

Enjoy!

The BRS is listed in the lastest JustForKicks newsletter.

I wrote that as a direct reaction to all the bands who write stuff like "imagine Mick Jagger had been locked up in prison for nine years with Led Zeppelin, and then they formed a pizza parlour together..." when asked to tell you what they sound like.

I'll be leaving the house at about 3.00 pm (took the day off work, which has turned out to be a good move - I'm feeling remarkably chilled) to pick up Spoffo from school, then we'll head back here for a lightning change and then it's up to Kilburn via the Jubilee line from Stratford. We shall then hit Nandos, and hopefully see a few of you there before heading on up to, er, wossitcalled to see, um, wossnames.

I don't need to change my lightning, so that should save me a few seconds.

Will be leaving the office by 3.30pm, driving down the M1 until the very end when I can get on to the A5, parking somewhere near the venue, and then heading to nandos, where we may well be joined by Neil as well.

Gutted I missed the do, chaps. This was one of my 3 must-see gigs this year but, alas, I'm am broney-stoke for the next cupla months.
I've already seen some superlative-filled comments and cracking photos of the event. And they made me feel SO depressed that I'm going to spend the rest of the day hiding from teh internetz. *sniff*

As it 'appens I spent the evening in the company of a rather talented multi-instrumentalist-type-chap, drinking his tea, stroking his cat* and waxing lyrical about The Big Red Snark.

I'll try and make it to the next one, 'kay? I'm sure it'll be worth waiting another 3 years for....

*This is not a euphemism.

I don't generally do reviews of any sort because my brain isn't really hard-wired that way, bit last night was a triumph. The opening - with Rob doing the "three wishes" monologue followed by the double-whammy of Rainland and I'm Not Crashing was possibly one of the finest starts to a rock set that I've ever seen. And it didn't stop there - the rest of the set, old and new, had a real joie de vivre to it which I've always felt was present when I've seen Tinyfish, but this was something special. Simon mentioned to me afterwards that it felt like a very relaxed gig, and that came over very well. Top-notch performances from everyone, though as on the album I thought you really rocked the house, Jim.

In fact I was just musing on the contrast between the Tinyfish set and Destroy All Monsters, who I also thought were great. But they were very different animals - witness the shredtastic interplay between Dec and Hywel, and compare with Jim's more measured but every bit as effective riffing and soloing. It's like the difference between rock guitar playing in the Seventies and Eighties (the school I suspect Jim would say he subscribes to) and the more modern approach of the last couple of decades (I know from conversation with Dec that as well as Lifeson he's an admirer of those sort of players). Maybe that's what sets Tinyfish apart as a band...it's as much song-driven straight-down-the-line rock music as it is prog. What takes it into be latter zone are things like Rob's spoken-word pieces, which live are superbly integrated into the music just as they are on the records, and the slightly tricksy song structures.

We enjoyed Geoff singing Ride, too - chatting to him afterwards he mentioned it had been fifteen years since he'd gigged, and it really didn't show.

A great evening - it really was my pleasure to be there. Fab cakes too, Nellie!

We had a fantastic time on stage last night and on behalf of the band we'd like to say a HUGE thank you to everybody who came down and supported us. You may have heard this before from other bands but you can tell from almost the first note, if the evening is going to be a good one and the moment Leon hit the downbeat at the start of Rainland, I got that warm fuzzy feeling.

The sound was great on stage and I hope it was good out in the audience too. Jim and Leon were in monster good form I think and everything was just a joy to play. We simply couldn't have asked for a better crowd of people to play for.

It was great to share a stage with the Destroy All Monsters guys and indeed to be able to play Ride with Geoff Wooton (at last). Wilf was right when he said that the last time Goffy had played live on stage was back in 1995 so for hin to come on and deliver the performance he did was bloody brilliant.

All in all, a night to remember boys and girls. This is going to sound like a terrible clichť but a band lives and dies on the quality of its fans and right now, we've never been more healthy.  ;D

Well what a night.

I was so looking forward to it all week, and even being overtired from being out the night before couldn't dampen my enthusiasm.

Nellie's cakes were lovely - I do love a band with a resident baker  ;D

Dec, now with the band, was so much better than at Mattfest and I really liked the proggier epic keyboard bits of their set. I have to admit I don't really like that guitar shreddie stuff so that side of it left me a bit cooler.

And then the main event. I don't know what look he was going for, but both Mme Cholet and I both thought Lee Scoresby from His Dark Materials when we saw Robert's fab new outfit for the BRS intro.

The term "instant classic" gets thrown around too much, and so I will avoid it here, but Rainland is hard to describe in other terms. The words "swirling" and "behemoth" also spring fleetingly to mind.

My favourite bit of the album so far was I'm not Crashing and I was secretly hoping it would make it on to stage, and there was certainly no disappointment when it did. It's prog and rock, with equal measures of both those terms. This time the words are "unleashed" and "determination"

So to The Big Red Spark. It sounded like you'd never played it before. But in a good way. Most of us have heard the song played live at least once, but never in context and never with such astonishing conviction as last night.

Then it was all over, although in reality it had just begun. You'd better live up to the promise Simon made last night that at some point you will play the whole of the album end to end.

After the Big Red Spark, I wasn't quite sure how to take Wide Awake at Midnight on the album (well podcast anyway) I've been playing just the suite this week. However now I know how to take it after hearing it played live. on its own merits which it has in droves.

It's an amazingly generous singer who gives up his mike to a guest to take the lead vocal. To do so at an album launch even more so. It was clearly the right choice though as the performance on Ride made Geoff's prolonged absence from gigging unfathomable.

And now were back on Terra Firma, a storming Motorville, a lovely Fly Like A Bird and a rousing Nine Months on Fire to close this amazing show.

Except of course you guys didn't even pretend to get off stage before coming back on for All Hands Lost. I think it was to Paul I said "If you had never written anything else you'd have something amazing to look back on" about All Hands Lost. Having stood at the front for almost the whole gig I had to sit down on the step just to drink it all in.

Then it really was over, a few goodbyes, a couple of hellos across the evening (Finally managed to say hello to Catherine and Mike) and out into the London air.

I know it's a bit weird, but I felt so proud of you last night. Like it was you guys fulfilling all the hopes I had for you. That's just going to be doubled in Lydney I'm sure when you are playing to an even bigger crowd, and deservedly so.

It's bizarre that it's only a couple of years since I discovered my mate Jim who I'd known for years through Marillion was also in some band, whose first CD I bought out of a sense of loyalty, never having heard a note.

Apart from meeting some really nice people and talking a lot of balls both in person and on this forum at heart you are just such a good band. I hope you know how damn well you played last night.

Now just don't take three years for the next album  ;)

Oh, apparently the gig flyers do not disslove in the wash, so I may have created a lasting testament to this album in paper form  ;D

Bo's photos are, indeed, excellent - it did strike me last night that you probably had most of the best photographers in Prog down at the gig.

I love Neil, Mike and rjforster's photos. We get on really well and compare notes. We all agreed that the Luminaire was very very dark. I think we startled Rob a bit yesterday. Mike, Neil and I was standing at the side of the stage when Rob emerged from the backstage area. "Oh god there is a whole bunch of you" he said before continuing "... a bunch is that the correct phrase?" upon which Neil said. "It is a click. A click of photographers." I found that quite amusing.

I'd just like to say a big thanks to the Tinyfish school for a superb evening. You guys were f*cking awesome, and DAM were fab and loud (but that's OK, I didn't need those frequencies, anyway  ;)  ). The Loose Ends speech, Rainland ( a POW! of RAWK) and I'm Not Crashing (awesome) were all pulled off expertly (honestly!) and the more regular numbers were also spotless. Goffy's performance was wonderful. That man really deserves to find a band, and soon! Such a nice bloke, too. Paul kept spoiling for a fight.

It was lovely to see everyone again. Nellie proved that the cake was not a lie, to yummy effect. Er, sorry I didn't say hello more properly, Sarah...  :P :D  Dec is one of the lovliest lovely men ever.  :)

Again, thanks to everyone for making it such a brilliant evening. And thanks to our own Philadelphia for providing a place to kip. (Oi! Stop lurking, you!  ;)  )

Can't wait for Summer's End. Word domination awaits! Just don't follow up Mitchell's idea.  :D

BANGIN' METAL!  ;D

That's reasonably good gurning, but it's not a patch on Andy Glass's gurning. At times, he makes playing the guitar look as enjoyable as getting your legs (or perhaps other, more sensitive areas) waxed, and hence makes Dec look like a rank amateur.

Title: Re: Album Launch Party - Friday 10th September @ The Luminaire

And Andy has moved it to a higher level which involves the legs.

Very true - the things Andy does with his legs whilst keeping his upper body still *and* gurning spectacularly at the same time mean I can't take my eyes off him.
