If all goes to plan, Mrs Pedro, Miss Pedro, my ProgPal and I will be there.
If only to shout "Bangin' metal", "Suitcase" and "Your Own Special Way" at the appropriate points.

It will also be interesting to see if any band has managed to mobilise their fans enough to skew the results.  :)

I'll be there - and looking forward to it all the more for hearing Mouse's recording of your previous acoustic outing...

With this talk of 'skewing the results' how does the voting work - is it a CRS panel, or poll of their members?

Anyhoo - do bring tshirts, etc along to Wath for us newbies to buy!

Title: Re: Tinyfish at the BOTY awards - 05/03/2011
Post by: RobH on February 26, 2011, 10:43:26 AM
One member; one vote.  I recall seeing or hearing that the CRS committee aren't allowed to vote. but I could be mistaken.

I don't think that there is much vote rigging, because it's not too easy to do.  The only thing that fans could do is to choose a favourite song so as not to split the vote across multiple different songs.  Last year for for example.

I seem to remember Strangefish causing a minor stir a few years ago by mobilising their fans. A number became members and voted for the band/ band members and they walked off with several awards. That's not to say they didn't deserve them  ;)

I guess when the membership isn't that big and turnout is probably like that for other votes around the country then a relatively small number of people can make a big difference.

Btw I'm only a share holder with no official capacity (other than trying to get Sarah to pay her membership fee) and have been known to be completly wrong on more than one occasion  ;D

Title: Re: Tinyfish at the BOTY awards - 05/03/2011
Post by: Pedro on February 26, 2011, 02:01:51 PM
I have to STRESS right now that I am not alleging that there is ANYTHING dodgy or dishonest about the these awards. I have the greatest respect for the guys at the CRS and what they do and I have no doubt that the awards accurately reflect the votes they receive.

The CRS Awards are very much about FUN in my opinion. Celebrating great music and great musicians in a good-humoured way. There's an element of pantomime to it and I really hope it stays like that. People shouldn't get all narky about the outcomes - ok, there is some advantage to be able to tag your album or your posters with the fact it/you were voted best but I don't think it's worth looking silly over.

Having (hopefully) put that straight, I should clarify that I also see nothing wrong with bands mobilising their fans.
Marillion did it very well with their chart-placing single and I have happily tried to do the same for other acts in recent times,

I know that Widge kicked up a proper fuss over the Strangefish wins and placings at the time - not a smart thing to do really. I really like Strangefish's "Fortune Telling" album and I had no problem with it winning - I enjoyed watching them live a few times too - very good band, sad to see them (semi)retired.

To conclude, and to illustrate my definition of "skewed", I will quote from the recent PROG magazine awards results :-

Best Drummer
1. Mike Portnoy [Transatlantic, Dream Theater, etc.]
2. Gavin Harrison [Porcupine Tree]
3. Neil Peart [Rush]
4. Nick D'Virgilio [Spock's Beard]
5. Jake Bradford-Sharp [The Reasoning]

That's the thing with prog, it's a small pond. Even the 'big' sites like Progarchives get this; it doesn't take many good or bad reviews to totally skew the placement of an album in their chart, a factor that the less scrupulous among the PA-istas have used to alter the rankings.

Title: Re: Tinyfish at the BOTY awards - 05/03/2011
Post by: Trace on February 26, 2011, 02:42:00 PM
How many members has the CRS got? It's a question that I've often considered, not that I ever expect an answer.
I've been a member for more than 10 years and admit I've never voted in their awards, usually because I don't know enough about the actual people or bands involved. I quite often have no idea who played bass on a certain album, or if a group is a CRS band. If there are more than a few members like me, then the voting pool starts to get pretty small.

I think Trace is possibly a very typical CRS member. I know that Miles would love the membership to be more involved, especially with the awards. You don't have to vote in every category just those you feel comfortable with!

I had every intention of voting this year, but after I'd made a complete hash of 3 forms (basically by voting for some folk only to realise that they weren't CRS acts and crossing them out) that I gave up.

Order it for collection on the night, perhaps?

As for doors time, don't forget this is a CRS gig and the weather may be cold and wet, dress appropriately and be patient! ;)

What is appropriate dress?  Cloth hat and gum boots perhaps?

One of the normal problems with gigs that I go to is that I park the car a way away and have to walk to the gig.  Then I'm left holding any coat that I might have worn in the stiffling heat of the concert.  This is true of almost every venue I go to.  Oh the joy on Saturday when Twang switched on the A/C about 10pm.

I think it's a fairly relaxed policy as long as you don't turn up in a thong and feather boa. Miles the the CRS will probably be the guy to speak to on this matter if you wish to make sure sir.

But we won't have to sit round tables to watch you guys, will we? That would be ridiculous.

I hope there won't be tables; the Maltezers will never reach the stage.

LOL
No, they have not had big sit-around tables out at Wath for any previous awards night, just for the Beer festival gig.

Hopefully they will have some or all of the "bleachers"-style seating pulled out - nice to have the option to sit sometimes.

When I went a couple of years back, the awards were given out on stage, so no tables and chairs or stuff like that.

Last year the awards where al on the stage, no tables on the floor area. There was a limited area of banked seating at the left hand rear of the hall.
Can i just point out we sat on these to watch Twelfth Night there and they rank among the most a*se numbing seat creations known to man. Uncomfortable would be an understatement!
PS theres a Weatherspoons pub around 100 yards away from the venue.

Wetherspoons have two things going for them:

(a) they're cheap
(b) the Thursday night curries aren't too bad

I did once have the Sunday roast, which was an absolute travesty.

To conclude, and to illustrate my definition of "skewed", I will quote from the recent PROG magazine awards results :-

Best Drummer
1. Mike Portnoy [Transatlantic, Dream Theater, etc.]
2. Gavin Harrison [Porcupine Tree]
3. Neil Peart [Rush]
4. Nick D'Virgilio [Spock's Beard]
5. Jake Bradford-Sharp [The Reasoning]

I laughed my arse off when I saw that.  I hear Ringo Starr came sixth :)

We are scheduled to play a 45 minute set I think. The BOTY Awards will signal the beginning of the end for All Hands Lost as a regular part of the set as we'll be giving it a rest for a while after we complete the tour later this year. The BOTY gig will certainly be the last time you'll hear the acoustic version for the foreseeable future.

The final time we will play it will be at the RoSfest show in May.

Well I thought it might be a hill and the bus driver's getting on a bit but actually, there are 4 stops...here's three of them...

...and, viewed from the roundlyabout at the other end, the fourth one, also the pub...which does look like a bench under a tree but I hear it is nicer than that...

But - if anyone gets really stuck, I've booked a twin room at the Sandygate, but will now be attending on my todd.

All I know is "Doors 6pm" and "CRS".
I'm pretty sure Douglas Adams could devise a spaceship propulsion system using the effect of combining those two factors....but it would probably not appear to be moving at all and probably not arrive on time.  ;)

I expect Pallas will prolly start about 9pm or soon after.

Mostly bloody Autumn. Oh, for f***'s sake.

There is nothing special about that record except that it's marginally better than some of the other turgid nonsense they've churned out. And their live snow is dull - well, it was with Heather Findlay, anyway, maybe it's better with Olivia Wossname (though on the evidence of Breathing Space I'm not confident).

"We was robbed" is about right.

Nice that Tinyfish were nominated for Best New Band! ::)

F*ck the awards, Tinyfish were great.  :)  A short set (Wide Awake, TBRS, a brilliant version of I'm Not Crashing, The June Jar, Fly Like A Bird and All Hands Lost To Feedback) which was very tight and sounded great. Lots of lovely reverb on Simon's vocals, solid bass from Paul as usual, Leon pulling off some equally solid and very impressive percussion playing and a lovely, warm guitar tone from Jim. Rob was good when he was on stage, too.  ;)

I didn't watch much of Pallas before the presence of a Rickenbacker became too much for me, so retired to the entrance area to chat with everyone. Much fun was had and it was a brilliant evening. Can't wait for full-on electric Bangin' Metal in April!  :)

Oh yeah, and Steve Hackett was there. He had a copy of The Big Red Spark. This made us all very happy indeed.  ;D  Next time, I might have the balls to go and say hello...

Peter Nicholls was never best male singer when he had a voice.

The Parade album came out in the summer of 2009.  I bought it at the Fish Convention, which was running the same weekend as the Cambridge Rock Festival.  So Best New Band of 2009, maybe...

And Gavin Griffiths is a lovely chap, but that award should have been a straight fight between Leon and Hen.

People always disagree when I suggest that members *need* to told what they can vote for.
I'd be happy for the CRS to produce a list if nominations cos they know more about the 'scene' than me (perhaps get the members to nominate but then filter out the "silly"/wrong nominations. Then get folks to vote from the shortlist.
It might get people to listen to stuff that might not otherwise?

Anyway, it was still a fun, if a little frustrating, night.

Stolen from the Manning website, Steve Hackett also got a copy of Charlestown to go with The Big Red Spark.  :)

Now, if you ask me, that's a real win for both bands. I also saw someone walking away from the Tinyfish merch table holding pretty much the full set of releases. I just hope he paid for them... I'd say it was a successful night for Tinyfish. The crowd that saw them perform grew to be quite big and very appreciative. I wonder if any of them know about the tour next month?

I don't agree with all but one of the award winners.  But - hey - that's the CRS.  It takes a long time for bands to break through into the collective members' memories.  This is why we get the same old winners year after year.  The fact that Tinyfish even got a mention is a brilliant achievement.  In 10 years' time, perhaps an award will be one.  In the meantime, well done Mostly Autumn - I salute your achievement.

That was a spectacular belt she was wearing wasn't it?  ;D

Such a fab night.  ;D

I can speak for all of the band when I say it was probably the best acoustic show we've ever played. The crowd were really on our side and all of us felt relaxed and delighted to be up on stage, playing the toss...er sorry, songs we love. A special mention goes to Paul who struggled with feedback on his bass for most of the evening but managed to deftly mitigate most of it by transposing his basslines on the fly (no mean feat I can tell you - especially during the opener Wide Awake At Midnight).

We had a very significant contingent of Fishes and Frosties down at the front and that made things lots of fun as there was the usual rambunctious interaction between band and crowd (especially, the bit between Leon and RacingHippo over who might win a proposed 'Best Latin Percussion In A Prog Style' award :D).

The awards ceremony was a lot of fun and none of us in the band thought we were going to win anything but I was happy to hear Jem get a big cheer when he was nominated. A big shout also goes out to JJ who gave Jem a much deserved namecheck and best wishes when he grabbed his award for being the best John Jowitt of 2010. More power to you sir.  :)

Pallas were so, SO, much better than the last time I saw them (at Summers End in 2009). Very focused and tight with less of the bombast that I've seen them display in the past (which is a good thing). They made my night by playing a fantastic version of Sanctuary (although Niall did mention afterwards that he was having a bit of a 'mare during that song but happily it didn't come across to us in the crowd).

On the Merch front we did fantastic business; well, well above our usual nightly sales figures which helps the band cause no end. A good number of people there were Tinyfish virgins and made off with the entire discography which was very encouraging.

A final shout of thanks goes out to Miles, Tommo Stephen and Andy of the CRS who made our trip and performance a very worthwhile and fun experience and naturally we'd like to thank all the fishes that graced us and the night with their presence. Cheers chaps and chapesses, we really appreciate it!  8)

Things I learned last night...

- That Leon is not a prophet since the world still appeared to be there when we left the gig.

- That apparently there's a whole genre of prog I'm not aware of - "Totty prog" and that apparently I need to get into it because all the best bands, singers and albums are there.

- Not to even remotely question or disparage any of the results in case a member of one of said Totty bands or their entourages bursts out of a nearby toilet cubicle to berate you.

- Not to approach the Progrock.co.uk CD stand after several glasses of wine if I want to survive the evening with any money left in my bank account.

- That both Steve Hackett and Andy Tillison look a bit spaced out and mildly scary in person

- That you cannot, no matter how many times you ask, get a plain Naan in a Chinese takeaway.

Not long arrived home in Scotty-land. Just wanted to say how much I enjoyed the set - a damn shame it was only 45 minutes long. I really enjoyed Pallas, but I would have happily split their time to have heard more (if that makes sense).

It really did feel more like a gathering of friends, where there just happened to be talented musicians (and comedians) - not so much a gig as a get-together - and very impressed - so will def make the trip down to see a full set at the first opportunity.

And thanks to Robh who introduced me to the Tinyfish way of thinking before the gig (and thekind offer a potential lifts to Peel gigs in future) and the guys for taking the time to sign my copy of BRS.

Oh - and got to speak to Steve Hackett, bought one of his albums for his to sign as an opener - he was talking to the 'singer of the year' at the time, who seemed slightly put out that it was only Steve's autograph I was interested in...

Tinyfish were great - I was one of the bunch at the front. I took various photos which I will post at some point soon. (Paul, I think you win the "Gurner of the Year" award.  ;D)

I am sad that I didn't get a photo of The Big Red Spork and am hoping that someone will post one soon.

Bit of a shame about the awards - I thought The Big Red Spark deserved more than just a nomination. Still, the way is clear for the next album - Simon just needs a radical makeover and to start wearing short skirts and high-heeled thigh-length boots. Then I think you'd be i with more of a chance.

We had a good night. Few beers, bit of lively banter, a Chinese, wondering about how Olivia Sparnnen can get into skirts that tight and leave no VPL. Unless, of course....  ;)

She's not as attractive in the flesh as in her photos (ooo you bitch Bert...) but she seemed like a nice lady. Nice hair style too. Bryn Josh (or whatever his name is) was nicely dressed in a suit and stuff, and Anne Marie Helder looked nicely turned out, but I thought the other members of Mostly Autumn let the side down a bit, frankly, especially the sweary Scottish fellow who bellowed something into the microphone upon receiving an award.

I'm concentrating on their clothes, cos I can't think of anything to say about their music that could have possibly warranted such an effusive and all encompassing triumph, frankly.

Still there we go. The CRS Awards are what they are. It's not like I didn't know what to expect. A bad advert for democracy and one member one vote, if you ask me. Not to mention a futile attempt to trump the one, true, Personality award lol (I'll take your Ann Marie Helder and raise it by 2 Godfrey's, a Mitchell, a Twang and a Camfield...)

When I'm King, Big Big Train will win stuff.

The presentations were the usual mix of incompetence and unintended comedy. Nice to see JJ keeping the side up by winning the JJ of the year award again, but he was actually quite emotional (I think there's an IQ scandal somewhere in the murk, waiting to be revealed) and he did a cool Jem namecheck. Any danger of a Nichols/Jowitt smackdown were avoided however by the simple expedient of them being at opposite sides of the hall.

I spotted Steve Hackett first and hurriedly went to tell the others who all bottled it when I said "well, let's go and say hello then"

Pallas were pretty good. The singer wore white ripped jeans though. He's 50 if he's a day. Mind you, I wore ripped bleached jeans and I'm 46, so what do I know ?

Ooo, ooo, I did get a "personal" mug though (Toy Story 3 should anyone want to know) which is now in my treasured collection of Rock related artefacts (thanks Paul. Nice shirt BTW. Did I tell you I've got one exactly the same etc etc...)

Seriously, it was a top evening and a great laugh, made enjoyable by the great company.  ;D ;D

Pallas were ok, as it goes.

I thought we played really well, but obviously what I'm here to talk about is the awards.

Firstly, massive congrats to Anne-Marie & her band mates..  However the votes were won, they did well & should be proud (if a little embarrassed) of their night.  But -

- I think CRS members might have been a bit backwards in their voting.  I've never heard Mostly Autumn, & had they won one award (Best Band, perhaps), I'd have considered getting along to a show.  But for them to win so many awards has made me (& everyone with an ounce of cynicism in them) think, "This is bullshiit".  I would've thought that if any single band had've walked off with the lot.  I've seen Panic Room, & whilst they're not my thing, they were at least tight & good at what they do.  Their drummer was my favourite member, & I spent most of my time in the room watching him.  But to suggest he's better than Henry Rogers is laughable.

In short, mass voting in this fashion will not win a band more followers - it'll tell fans what they already think they know, & put off cynics.  I think Tommo shot himself in the foot a bit when he made the following speech -

"And now for the CRS Prog Personality Of The Year award.  We asked the CRS membership to really think outside the box on this one, & to vote for who they think works really hard to keep the Prog scene alive - it need not be a musician.  & the winner is - Anne-Marie Helder!"

Seconded although it has to be said that there are two minor mitigations to this in that (a) Like Twang and The Peel, the CRS has its roots very much in the location of the gigs it promotes and as such, we were probably witnessing a particular internal dynamic at work and (b) politics in a small pond means that being around for a long time hath its privileges and bands like MA and IQ have been around for an awfully long time now. As strange as it might sound and in terms of the CRS, bands like Tinyfish really ARE one of the new kids on the block.

I would also like to say that one of the qualities that I most admire about you Leon is that you look right past the politics and call it like it is. If there were more people like you out there mate, then perhaps musicians like Hen, Moo or Jem might get more of a look in.

Speaking personally, I was very pleased to be a part of it simply because it was a very good natured affair with loads of new faces mixing with the old guard. I just wish they'd asked Wilf to DJ.  ;D

He's also the drummer for Mostly Autumn (and Parade).

Honestly, I am not competant to judge "best drummer" or "best anything-else-ist" really.  I did not agree with 11 or the 12 awards - obviously as I did not vote for them.

How Jem doesn't win best keyboards I'll never know.  But it did give us a chance to hear a wonderful speach by John Jowitt.  I don't suppose that Jem cares that much as he's won proper awards.

I've never seen Mostly Autumn play live.  But, at the moment, I don't consider Olivia Sparnenn to be the best singer in Mostly Autumn.  And the choice of Bryan Josh is, to be charitable, odd.  To be fair, Bryan himeself said he didn't think he was a good guitarist.

Hello folks

Some interesting comments - THANKS Leon - so deserving of a couple of comments...

Firstly, this may seem like a "well, Duuuhh" thing to say, but with awards like these - nay, most awards - you really need to replace the word "Best" with "favourite"...that makes things a bit clearer, most of the time...

I actually think there's something else going on with Mostly Autumn.  Their last few albums have been largely ignored by the CRS, and I think that the society embraced this most recent one has as much to do with a "welcome back" as it has to do with the quality of the actual album itself.

Just my opinion, of course...

Great to see everyone.  I had a blast!

Really sorry about that, we didn't think we'd have anything there, but last minute found out we could. As you can see from Pedders video, things were a bit odd!

I have the new magazine - I know that a lot of other people are members, but some people possibly aren't so, here is the tally:

Best Band - Tinyfish 8th (Frost* 9th)
Best Male Volcalist - Simon Godfrey 7th
Best Album - TBRS 5th
Best Bass Player - Paul Worwood 10th
(Best Keyboards - Jem Godfrey 3rd)
Best Drummer - Leon Camfield 9th (pipped by Carl Palmer this year Leon)
Best New Band - Tinyfish 3rd (Dec Burke Band 9th)
(Personality - Jem 3rd; Twang 6th)

All in all, a very fine showing.   :)

That is a VERY boring list of top 10 guitarists - I'd venture it bears no real relation to anything most of them actually did last year.  Disappointing.

I'm not sure that I agree with many of the awards, but I vote for who I though put in the best performance of the year.  And I am absolutely not competant to make judgements.

Best Male Vocalists:
1. Peter Nicholls (yawn from me)
2. David Longdon
3. John Dexter Jones (yay from me)
4. Steve Hogarth
5. John Wetton
6. Damian Wilson (he gets my vote for next year)
7. Simon Godfrey
8. Tony Short (what band is he in?)
9. Mark Trueack
10. Andy Sears

Best Female Vocalist:
1. Olivia Sparnenn (not even the best female singer in MA in my opinion)
2. Anne Marie Helder (how anyone could not vote for AMH is beyond me)
3. Tina Booth
4. Kim Seviour
5. Lisa Fury
6. Rachel Cohen
7. Heidi Widdop
8. Katie Buckhaven (we saw her supporting Jump at the end of last year)
9. Joanne Hogg
10. Margriets Boomsma

Rob - I would suggest you are more than competant to be making judgements - and certainly more competant than some of the muppets who must be voting, based on who is ending up in these lists.

It was the bass list that confused me - I had heard of and know who 9 of the 10 musicians are in the list.  But, what band is Andy Smith in?  It's not a name I recognised.

I believe it's more important that the awards exist than who actually wins them.  But it is noce to see your own choices being validated.  Sometimes.

Andy Smith is a mate of mine on my course. Whether he's moonlighting as a bass player in a Prog band elsewhere in the country is yet to be confirmed.

Andy is actually a mate of a mate of mine - as well as playing Bass in Mostly Thingy, he's also the Bass player in Pete Harwood's band Morpheus Rising. And very Bangin' Metal they are too. Andy's a lovely chap!

I know nobody in MA - I have never heard a note of MA, I have heard a lot of bile towards them, but I have no issue with them myself.

Perhaps MA is an abbreviation of MArmite - certainly the vituperation at the hands of various in the tank, or on the MOLF suggests that few people are indiferent to them.

I actually think we should stop picking on MA. It wasn't like they rigged the vote or anything. I don't hate MA, I just don't like their music stylistically or, in fact, any way but I feel the same about loads of bands.

IMHO I believe other bands and musicians were more "deserving" and I didn't travel 250 miles to see MA win, but there you are.

I completely fess up to my staggering hypocrisy in this regard.

And I might just be being grumpy.

My main problem with them is that they're dull. Most of the music doesn't go anywhere, it's totally 'horizontal' - no light and shade, and melodically and harmonically they play it ridiculously safe.

Also, I've read some interviews where the main protagonists come over as somewhat precious. As the John Peel of prog radio I'm programmed to despise such behaviour ;D

I think that's a being a bit hard on the CRS members mate. I know there is a lot of conservative attitudes going about but in much of prog (and indeed all music), tenure is nine tenths of the law. People know the established bands like IQ, Pendragon, etc and they believe that supporting them in any way possible is what a fan does.

The newer bands are always going to struggle against that tide and bands like us wankers can be seen as young upstarts when you compare how long we've been around compared to other outfits.

Of course I am being harse.  I am actually a shareholder in the organisation and I believe that it is far important that the awards exist than who actually wins them.

Obviously Pendie and IQ have more chance to do well as more people will have heard their album because they have earned their following.

Andy Faulkener and I were discussing some of the voting patterns a few weeks back.  One of his suggestions was that after someone wins an award 5 times (well pick a number) they are enshrined in a hall of fame and become ineligible for any more wins.

I hope that for the "unsung hero" award that any previous winner is automatically ineligible.  This is one award that should be spread around.

Well, yes, obvs  ;D - but he does need to put a few more on the UCAS form as well, just in case the unthinkable happens and he doesn't get in there.
