Post by: AmazingWilf on January 31, 2012, 09:48:11 PM
Following the theme of solo albums by musicians better known as band players - a suggestion from Paul this week, Alex Lifeson's solo project, Victor

Victor - Victor (1996)

Don't get your hopes up too much.
Personally I found it quite interesting when I heard it years ago, but nothing stood out.
I shall listen again with older (wiser / jaded) ears.

Oh man, I loved this album and played it to death when it came out. Victor contains one song which sounds more like Rush than Rush in the form of Start Today. The ex Four Non Blondes singer Dalbello does an amazing Geddy circa 2112 impression. Like a bumble bee, the bastard thing should never fly but happily it does!

Plus, it also has Shut Shuttin' Up which is both brilliant and very Alex. You'll know what I mean when you hear it.  ;) I remember Paul and I happily yelling 'shut...shut...shut up!' in the car on the way to the recording sessions for the first Men Are Dead album.

4 stars from me as it's the best Rush album never made.

The production values are very much in the style of the late 90/00 era Rush so it is lacking a bit in bottom end warmth but Alex's strong melodic talent and sense of humour shine through well. It's good to listen to stuff like this and Geddy's solo effort, My Favourite Headache as you can see better how and what they bring to the table for the group albums.

You can't beat a good warm bottom end, I always say.

Dame just asked what I am listening to.  I said Alex Lifeson, you could see he then recognised it sounded like Rush.  I said "It's like Rush but with better vocals", to which he said "your words not mine"

Yes, this is either a 4 or 5.  I will give it a listen again another night before deciding.

Listening to this for the 2nd time will vote at the end but it's either a 3 or a 4.

Which Zep song did they nick that riff from in Start Today? and I can't decide if Darbello is more or less annoying than Geddy Lee, I'm edging towards less as I didn't get the nails down a blackboard feeling I get when Geddy Lee sings.

Have had this for a while but don't play it very often.
A bit like a Rush album with a mere mortal on drums.Shows how interesting Peart can make some ordinary riffs.
Also reminds me of Foo Fighters which probably says as much about the Rush influence on them as anything.

It may surprise you to learn that I have NEVER heard this album... up till now.

For me, it's typical Lifeson. At times weird, unusual, heavy, beautiful... the man is nothing if not a musical maverick.

I don't suppose it will appeal to everyone, and being a Rush fan certainly helps, but I thought it was excellent. A way better, IMHO than My Favourite Headache, which I didn't get on with at all.

I guess the most surprising thing about the album is the hard edged and slightly risqué sexual lyrics. Why I should be surprised by that I'm not surer, unless it’s because Rush are such an asexual band. I understand from the research I've done that Lifeson and his Missus were going through a difficult patch at the time and he was surveying the wreckage of friends relationships around him. There's a lot of revenge and guilt sex going on here !

I think the lyrical content and the slightly disjointed musical approach Lifeson has, gives the album a slightly skewed quality, which actually puts it fair and square back into Rush territory for the casual listener  - you either get it and love it or hate it completely.

For me, well, see if you can guess where I sit...  ;)

I am surprised by that Bert!  :o

I have gone for a 4, I like Rush, therefore I liked this

Interestingly and unconnected to this I found my copy the other day, right at the bottom of a pile of unplayed and almost forgotten stuff. It resides there because after two listens many moons ago I decided that's where it should live. I like almost all of the rush catalogue, especially the 80's stuff but I could not get into this at the time. I shall revisit and report back.  :)
