Which is a thread I never thought I'd add.  :)

Wow. I'll admit - I didn't see that one coming. It's quite interesting, isn't it? We all know the time comes to everyone, and we know it comes to the big names in the world, but it's still odd when the news actually breaks. I can almost feel time passing over...

It's all very sad, as is the passing of any other person. I think I'll be thinking about this for quite a while...

(Sorry if that sounds a bit heartless, by the way. It's just a bit surprising.)

Well, I suppose that's one way of getting out of a commitment to do a bunch of gigs.

Somewhat mixed feelings about this one. He was part of the soundtrack to my childhood and teenage years and beyond - some amazing achievements such as Thriller. But I suspect the grooming and training for startdom from an early age warped him irretrievably. The Piers Morgan interview with Donny Osmond, pretty much an exact contemporary of his (about a year ago) gave some fairly chilling insights into the life of a child star. Not nice.

Rest in peace, Michael.

Strange cove - echo the feeling of ambivalence - celarly the fxxxed up childhood led to a fxxxed up adulthood which the degree of success afforded by making some exceptionally good pop records meant he could avoid dealing with.

He was at the very least foolish to allow himself to repeatedly be in inappropriate situations with other people's children, and of course if the accusations he was cleared of or paid off had any substance then there isn't a fxxxed up childhood on the planet can excuse it.

Watch for a terrible spate of suicides of the stupid in the wake, and sweeping under rugs of complexity in a tirade of unbalanced adoration.

No doubt he was a cultural icon and as such his passing IS a cultural event, I acknowledge its significance but cannot raise any emotion about it. He was so disconnected from any reality I recognise that his ultimate disconnection is nothing more than fact.

I was only really a fan of 'Off The Wall' to be honest. Some good stuff afterwards but that was the one for me. As Gerorge Harrison said; all things must pass.

All I will say is I'll bet the promoter behind the O2 gigs is going to find that not many people will be returning their tickets as they'll keep them as a souvenir (just like the Nirvanna tour).

I am not a fan of Michael Jackson. I wholly agree with the sentiments of Great Uncle Bulgaria above.

It is sad to see anyone pass, and his millions of fans will no doubt feel a great sense of loss.

Don't want to sound cold but i was more hit by farrah Fawcett's death. Now she was an icon. Maybe it's just a bloke thing. Jacko i can take or leave. (i can feel the glares of disaproval already) Made some great music to his credit but i'm sure pitty was never high on his wish list.

But as you say, always sad.

Jacko's music was always in the background for me when I was growing up. Yes he was a talented man but boy was he seriously deranged by his life (and some would say "Is it any wonder?"), but I feel no grief at all at his passing.

Hell I'm even finding the plethora of sick jokes amusing - does that make me a bad person?????

I'm wondering what MJ would have been without Quincy Jones at the helm of Off The Wall, Thriller and Bad - not very much I suspect, as it perhaps born out in the observation that after he stopped working with QJ his record sales took a nose-dive. I think QJ was perhaps the real genius behind the King of Pop.

Can I join in? I was bigging up Quincy on the Marillion Forum if that helps.

(actually it's the "against the world" bit I find appealing - I like them odds)

I think he lost a whole generation of fans, particularly the ones who are now parents, when he started dangling his baby over the balcony and then all the inappropriate "childcare" scandals that followed.
He was madder than Mad Jack McMad and can't imagine many people I know feeling a huge loss at his passing.
I bet the O2 is a bit peeved!

You could well be right - I'm not a huge Genesis fan therefore I can't comment ;D

Farrah Fawcett died and went to heaven.  St Peter said, "Farrah, you have been a good person whilst you were alive, I will grant you one wish" and Farrah replied "I'd like you to do something to protect all the children of the World..."

Michael Jackson is going to be melted down and recycled into plastic bags so that he can remain a danger to children..

Yeah keep em coming.....

What is paler than Michael Jackson?

Michael Jackson now.

I could do this all night but I am afraid of fishnet moderator out to get me.

Trust me, I've heard worse today.

What fascinates me is the sheer volume of these jokes that have suddenly appeared. Was someone writing them and then storing the results in some underground vault waiting for this day?

I heard that Ticketmaster aren't giving out refunds yet.  They are waiting for confirmation that he's really dead.

My bro was telling me that two of his friends had a bet about the appearance/ non-appearance of Jacko to the concert one of them got a ticket to.  So, that bet is now settled.

Some things there are way over the top.  The name of the thread is "Jackos croaked it", which has a slightly different image to this one.

PS - congratulations on getting your album cover on the front page of the site, Wilson.

Reminds me a bit of seeing Bob Kerr's Whoopee Band at the Half Moon. They had a guest appearance from Vernon Dudley Bohay-Nowell who was about that age and sang Temptation in a very high voice whilst dressed in a Tarzan loincloth.

That reminds me of the excellent Swedish children television show Trazan & Banarne.

Jim will probably be able to watch reruns of this.

Edit:

It featured the Electric Banana Band
