Title: Progeny Festival - Sat 8th May 2010: Tinyfish Acoustic Set
Post by: Simon on February 26, 2010, 03:48:08 PM
Hello boys and girls

Just off the phone with Miles of the CRS and we're now booked to play an acoustic set during the Saturday lunchtime slot (beween 1.00pm and 2.15pm) at this year's Progeny Festival in Leamington Spa. The venue has not yet been named but it'll be a pub very close to the main venue.

We'll post more details as they arrive here at Tinyfish Towers. See you down there!

I hope it goes well.  Out of interest - Saturday or Sunday? - not that I can go anyway.

LOL I did wonder if you had moved.

I'm down in Stroud the evening before seeing Pendragon, or we could have sorted something  :(

It is a shame you are not in the main venue as apparently backstage you can find Tammy Wynette's pink gypsy caravan.

 ;)

No, I really did.

No, this is not a euphamism. They really do have a caravan that used to belong to Tammy Wynette backstage at The Assmbly Rooms. They also have a Gatlin gun just inside the backstage door pointing at anyone entering the building that way. The "Green room" also includes 3 very 1950s looking penny arcade rides like you might see outside Superdrug - a car, a boat and a rocket. I took a particularly good photograph of Steve Rothery using his iPhone of him squeezed into the car ride during the L=M tour.

The Assembly rooms in-house staff are cracking chaps too. One of the nicest venues I've ever worked at.

From Miles by e-mail:

Quote
THE PROGENY FRINGE FESTIVAL

This will consist of 3 very intimate acoustic gigs featuring 4 acts, as follows:

Friday 7th May 7.00-11.00pm
'The 2 J's', better known as John Mitchell and John Beck performing a variety of songs from their illustrious careers with It Bites, Kino and perhaps a few surprises. Plus 'Mini-Magenta', Christina Booth and Chris Fry performing an, as yet, undisclosed selection of songs. What a great night this promises to be!

Saturday 8th May 1.00-2.45pm
'Tinyfish Acoustic' - what better way to set yourself up for the main event than to share music, laughs and a lunchtime pint with the always entertaining London lads.

Sunday 9th May 1.00-2.45pm
'Chris Johnson' - Best known for being a member of Fish's band, Mostly Autumn and now fronting his own project, Parade. A relaxing Sunday lunch in cosy surroundings, sounds perfect.

These shows will all take place in the basement bar of the Robbins Well pub, which is a 5 minute walk from the Assembly and also serves decent, reasonably priced food in the main bar.

Tickets are limited to 100 for each day and will only be available from the CRS Shop at http://www.classicrocksociety.co.uk or by phone on 01327 310088 and will go on sale in the next couple of days, priced as follows:

'The 2 J's' & 'Mini-Magenta' £10
'Tinyfish Acoustic' £5
'Chris Johnson' £5
or
Weekend Ticket £17.50 (£15 to CRS members).

And on the same e-mail, Miles stated that Pure Reason Revolution & Parcivals Eye have had to drop out.

I was dubious about Progeny - for me fringe is way better than the main festival.

Still, it's nice to know people can go to the Fringe without any obligation to go to the main event  ::)  Friday 7th is Pendragon down in Stroud, so also nice that they chose to now put something on to clash with that.  Jump are playing the Nag's Head in High Wycombe on the evening of the 8th - half tempted to go to Pendragon, pick up the Tinyfish set and then bugger off home via Wycombe.

I suspect PRR finally spotted it was 'Prog' and pulled out - not impressed with the way they handle themselves when it comes to gigs, to be honest.

I guess Solstice must have been added to the bill to replace the acts which have dropped out.

Spoffo and I are considering a day trip.

Simon, you may not know this, but is there likely to be an age restriction in the place you'll be playing? I know it's 14+ for the main event, but we're only in it for the 'Fish...

My guess is that it will be similar in style to the slightly eccentric November gig at the Peel.

And Tina & Chris without Rob seems somewhat odd.

A question was asked of me by one of the forum mebers here if young adults will be permitted entry to the pub in which we'll be performing on the weekend of Progeny. If there are any other individuals out there who are considering brining their young 'uns along with them, this is just to let you know that I have contacted Miles at the CRS and he is going to enquire about admitance from the pub landlord.

Thanks Simon :)

And Spoffo will be tickled pink to be described as a "young adult"

Actually, when you think about it, for an event called 'Progeny' it should certainly be allowed...

Miles just rang me back - unfortunately the pub has a strict "over-18s only" policy, so it'll just be me for this one. The Spoff will, no doubt, encounter the joy of a Tinyfish gig at some other occasion in the future :)

Prog in 'shoots itself in the foot' shock.

I was talking with someone from Leamington who is a guitarist with a band who are not prog.  He was telling me there is a thriving young music scene in the area - now, wouldn't it have been good if these side events, or certainly the 2 lunchtime ones, could have been available to a 14+ audience...maybe try to bring the average age of the audience down below 73.

Ask Ashleaze or Catherine if you can borrow their beards for Spoff...

lol, nice idea, Jim and James :)

I guess it's not Progeny's fault - and Miles was good enough to look into the matter for me (and thanks Simon for nudging Miles, too) - but a pub's a pub, I guess, and it's their rules rather than CRS's.

I do think, though, that it's short-sighted to not allow children over the age of, say, 12 into pubs for events - gigs, for example. If children are exposed to the environment from an appropriately early age perhaps it's less likely they'll go bonkers when they hit 18 and end up with drink problems? Dunno, I'm probably over-simplifying a bit...

But yeah, it is a bit of a problem - Huw's a genuine fan of the music and would love to come with me to, for example, The Peel. He'll get older, of course...in the meantime I'll just have to drag Chris along ;)

I've got a spare, Tim, if you have trouble therewith!

Thanks for the safety net, Mr. Wilf! :)

I'll be driving up to Leamington from my hovel in East London on Saturday morning, and doing so alone. If anyone would like a lift, and you're either reasonably near me or en route, or you can get to me (Plaistow/West Ham/Stratford) by 9.30, then I'd be more than happy to give you a ride.

Let me know via pm or email if interested.

Because as we know we can ride...we get carried inside...

Just to let everyone know, we'll be on stage for around and hour and fifteen minutes and performing an extended version of the set we played at the Peel a couple of weeks back (including the first ever all acoustic rendition of Wide Awake At Midnight).

Vaguely interesting note: Last week's show was the first time EVER in our three years of gigging that we have not performed Motorville. This is a situation we fully intend to rectify on Saturday.

My only regret about the day is that we can't share the stage again with Jump, who are a lovely bunch of guys (and girl) and put in a fab set to boot. It was a pleasure to support them at their 20th anniversary show. :)

Oooooooooh! Can I record it on my field recorder? Fancy a live bootleg?  ;) :D

Actually, I was going to bring the thing anyway to record some people's answers to certain questions to use in some music, Dark Side stylee. If I can be arsed to remember.

Jump are playing at High Wycombe on Saturday night - going on stage at 9pm and they have no support act either.  So you could get back down the M40 and do the support slot.   ;)  If JDJ hasn't been arrested for moving election posters.

I should be at the Jump gig if anyone else is going along.  Otherwise, have a great time on Saturday.

Funny you should mention that sir. Twang recorded both our show and Jems at the 2Js and an A acoustic gig at the Peel a while back. I heard the results and they are pretty damn good. The word is that Twang was looking to interest someone into getting it onto a cover CD but failing that, I might see if he can pass it to us.

Well, if you don't mind an inexperienced, crazed loon having a go at mixing and possibly ruining a potentially great live recording, I wouldn't mind having a go.  :)

I wish I could be at the Jump gig - they are having the current band playing a set largely based around what they played at The Peel, and then bringing in some former band members to play another set of older stuff.  If it was not Twelfth Night headling at Progeny I'd be heading back down the M40 after the lunchtime show...

Looks pretty close to the station.

I will, no doubt spend the usual amount of time thrashing around trying to find somewhere to park :)

I think I usually park near the station, in which case you come out on to a road and turn right - you should get to The Assembly first, and then the Robbins Well seems to be round the corner from there.

I doubt I will be able to park there for the whole of Saturday, though, and I am loathe to pay for parking...so I shall show up early and look for safe side roads.

Coming up from Stroud on the Friday, staying at the Holiday Inn for Friday and Saturday night.  Booked at around 3 o'clock this morning  ::)

The main Progeny starts at 3.30pm each day.

Absolutely spiffing gig today, chaps. Jim said he thought today's was an improvement on the Peel last month, and I'd go with that.

Highlight for me was 'Wide Awake At Midnight', which was a revelation acoustically. I love the song anyway, but in that format it really seemed to 'breathe', with the changes in dynamics coming over superbly.

'All Hands Lost' was great too - loved the Copacabana section ;D

We had a brilliant time and it was great to see so many new faces in amongst the hardcore forums members. It was a brilliant turnout and I remember one moment warbling away behind the mic when I got a bit emotional seeing almost everybody from the Fishtank in the audience smiling back at me. That was fantastic.

A big thank you goes out to Miles, Stephen, Tommo and the rest of the CRS boys for organising everything. We managed to sneak into the main hall to have a chat with David Robinson and the venue just looked amazing.

I'd also like to thank the phalanx of photographers who stalked about at the front of the audience (I counted six people all with cameras at one point snapping away) who went about their job and trying very hard not to get in anyone's way. It was deftly done and I can't wait to see if they have captured Leon 'adjusting himself' during Wide Awake At Midnight.    :o  ::) :D

A big thanks to Nellie for being Merch Maid as always and to everyone who bought CDs/T-shirts, etc. I think today saw the very last of the debut album CDs being sold too. Now all I have to do is remaster it and we can talk re-releases with Festival in the future.

Cheers again. We had a blast.  :)

;D  That's only needed if I've had one or two whiskys. Or three. Or four...

A great gig it was indeed, chaps. Wide Awake was my highlight, too. It really worked in the acoustic environment and it proved how tight you all are as a band - some of the things Leon came out with as it went on were brill.  :)

For those who didn't know, I had my field recorder with me and recorded the whole thing. I don't think it did my hand any good as I couldn't move while holding it (the microphones are incredibly sensitive), which is why I wasn't more animated with applause, grooving, etc. I listened to some of it on the train on the way back and it actually sounds pretty decent. My girly laughter is quite loud sometimes and during the quieter moments you can even hear Bo's camera snapping away, but the music is fine. I'll have to experiment with some compression and other production magic to see if I can improve it, but all in all, I think it was a successful experiment.

It was great to see everyone again. Thanks to Bert, I had a quick look in at the main thing and caught a bit of Circulus (I think). Hm. Yes. Not my cup of tea. But I did buy 3000 Days by The Pineapple Theif at last, and the venue was lovely. I must thank livingforever in advance for the Transatlantic ticket - I'm looking into transport as I type!  ;D

The day got a bit surreal on the train home. I was joined by loud, singing Grimsby supporters from Derby to Doncaster, then I was in a club called Riley's until midnight with my Brother, absolutely exhausted and playing pool.

Great to see you guys again. Any chance to drive 150 miles to shout "suitcase" in a basement bar is a chance I'll take!

I've put some piccies up at http://www.flickr.com/photos/rjforster/ (http://www.flickr.com/photos/rjforster/). Enjoy.

Seems like I may see some of you at the Transatlantic show in a couple of weeks.

Cheers

I decided to leave Progengy3 due to too many capes yesterday afternoon and I am not going today. Anyway I got to see Tinyfish again, yay.

I am in the process of uploading my photos but I doubt they will compete with Rick's. I also have to ask Rick's forgiveness for getting in his way as I was moving around.

Nice pictures.  Was this the same place where Pedro was videoing the day before?  It seems a lot brighter.

It was, Rob. I wasn't there on Friday, but it certainly was well lit on Saturday, but still ambient enough to retain an atmosphere.

I believe the reason why it might appear brighter is that Rick (and the rest of the photographers there) used special fixed length lenses with wide open apetures and high iso settings to be able to get shots at all. Usually video cameras does not have lenses which allow you to shoot in low lighting.

I was shooting with a lo-cost Sony compact camera (which absolutely doesn't have any kind of decent lens for light capture!) and I was facing into one of only two spot lights and these were at the side and behind the acts. I could probably have pushed the camera settings a little more at the time but didn't think about it....too concerned with enjoying the show!

I took one photo with flash which shows that spotlight and the delightful backdrop decorations!

Usually video cameras does not have lenses which allow you to shoot in low lighting.

I noticed a couple of f2.8 zoom lenses but there was at least yourself, me and one other (and probably more) with a 50mm f1.4. I learned from a recent birthday party I shot and remembered to override the auto iso from its normal max of 1600 to 2500 and shot at f1.4. The shots all had an exposure of between 1/50 and 1/100 of a second which will freeze most things except strumming and drumming.
The pictures came out lighter than my eyes showed the room to be, certainly the yellow uplighter behind Simon in many of the pictures was more orange to my eyes. But I did no post processing bar a few crops and uploaded them as they came.

I toyed with swapping to my 10-22mm crazy wide angle but at f3.5 it lets in ~7 times less light, meaning that even with pushing up to higher iso I would still be looking at blurry 1/20 second shots (or thereabouts) at best.

Which is all a long winded way of saying that fast primes rule! And battery grips.
The two things that rule are fast primes and battery grips. And Tinyfish shows.
Among the many things that rule are...

Cheers

Rick

The day got a bit surreal on the train home ...

It got a bit surreal for me during Circulus performance.

Not only were there weird blokes in tights and capes on stage, a weird guy approached me and started to talk to me about Lovecraft and Cthulhu. It was not until he left a few minutes later with the parting comment "nice t-shirt" that I remembered that I was wearing my Miskatonic University t-shirt.

The difference between Circulus and the other cape-wearing proggy sorts is that Circulus dress like that all the time. Michale Tyack, the main guy, is a 'medievalist', whatever that means.

Their albums have got progressively (ho, ho ho) more odd. The first one, snappily entitled 'The Lick On The Tip Of An Envelope Yet To Be Sent', is almost yer normal, Fairport/Steeleye/Albion Band fusion, with a Gryphonish twist. The second, 'Clocks Are Like People', is pretty decent, developing more of a sound of their own, albeit a bit barmy. 'Thought Becomes Reality' is just insane. Makes Trembling Bells look like Motorhead.

Anger over Tinyfish lacklustre performance

Posted Mon 10 May 2010 12:39 BST by Mitch Carter in The Guestlist

Music fans were left fuming after Tinyfish failed to dazzle at a pub round the corner from London's O2 Arena this weekend.

The concert, entitled ‘The Gift of Herring', was Tinyfish first UK performance in over 13 days and featured songs from ‘Tinyfish', ‘Curious Things' and many more of the musical releases with which they made their name.

Tickets for the gig sold for as much as £1.40, yet tens of fans reportedly left the venue before the first interval after a lacklustre performance from the singer.

According to one audience member Simon Godfrey sang for just 30 seconds in the first hour leaving the rest of the performance up to his backing singers whilst he ended the show reading passages from a children's book someone else wrote with their daughter.
Mark Shenton a writer with performing arts magazine The Stage said: "Not since an arena stage production of Ben-Hur last year staged a series of intentional chariot crashes here have I witnessed such an unintentional pile-up of car-crash musical theatre."
Speaking to the Daily Mirror, one fan who had travelled from Kent said: "I feel totally robbed and I would like the ticket price back. I saw at least 2 people walking out. It became like a second-rate pantomime."

Simon Godfrey, who is now 74, never suffered serious and sustained damage to his voice after an operation to remove a growth on his vocal cords did not happen because it was not required. By his own admission, the singer can only use the lower octaves of his voice, ruling out many of the vocally-demanding songs for which he says he is renowned.

Concert promoter AEG defended the performance by saying: "The show next door started and finished with a standing ovation. That speaks for itself."

It seems every time Tinyfish play they suck all the good stuff out of the creative ether and a major star has a nightmare gig - first Whitney Houston (before The Peel gig) and now Julie Andrews last weekend.  I took those reviews and changed a few words.

I've put a few Tinyfish pics up on Bookface. Of course, I can't give you the link at the moment as I'm at work; I'll attempt to remember to post it later. They're a bit cruddy due to the low levels of light in the venue.

I think that, in a similar way to how simon sucks all the creativity out of singers who weren't there (still struggling with that one!), the low levels of light in the venue can be directly attributed to those people (you know who you are) with the serious lenses on their serious cameras.
Those boys are clearly hoovering more light than is available out of the room into their pictures (how else could Leon appear to be discussing pineapple insertion with Paul in what looks like broad daylight when we all know it was dark enough to make badgers bump into trees down there?).
Something should be done.  >:(

Surely not true of Mr Wilson as I've seen people with camera at their gigs even seen people with photo passes too, although given they kept it so dark for the first three songs on the Incident tour I doubt anyone manged to get a decent shot

They made a specific announcement before The Incident tour gigs that no photography was allowed - it was some American talking about people using 'cell phones'.  It was just directed at the audience, not at anyone with passes.

This isn't a dig at people who do enjoy taking pics at gigs, but I must say PT's 'No photos' rule for the Incident gig really did help with the atmosphere. It was like being at a gig 10 years ago when people seemed to be paying full attention to the music and no distracting little screens all over the audience...  :)

I really am an old fart, aren't I? But seriously, I do find it hard to concentrate on the gig when the person right in front of me is taking really awful snaps with their mobile.

I would have thought there being no light at Porcupine Tree gigs would be due to the fact that its all been absorbed by the bloody miserable music.  :P

As for Bobert Priff, maybe he tried to sue light for brightening him up without permission, and subsequently banned it from all future performances.

I'm sure it's a man thing. Having those monster lenses is some sort of compensation for having small, er, other things.
I'm not sure what you can imply from this but I used my smallest lens (in terms of length, girth, price and weight).

Thereby implying that your biggest lens must be absolutely ENORMOUS... obviously over-compensating!  ;D
I think I've proved my point...

I vote no-confidence in Freudian psychology in general.

I vote no confidence in anyone who subsribes to the kind of nonsense that gets trotted out when people talk about camera lenses (for example).

It is the shape it is because that's the shape it has to be in order for it to do the job for which it is intended. If you see a cock every time you see a big lens on a camera, perhaps it is you who has the problem (with size, girth, envy, masculinity, femininity, your mother/father), not the person trying to take a photograph of the drummer without lying across the rack toms and cymbals.  :-\

There is a little review of this in the CRS Mag which landed on my doorstep today.  My favourite part was the last part...

Special mentions must also go to ... and Leon Camfield on drums and general madness.

Absolutely - there was barely an act that I would leave Wokingham for in the main festival (called YawnFest here) but gthe fringe looked top rate.  I was disappointed to miss the fringe but realistically, there was no point in going to Leamington for Friday night, an hour on Saturday and another hour on Sunday.

I see that plans are afoot for Progeny 4.  Perhaps it should all be held in the public bar.  OPr even in the pubic bar - perhaps this would draw a bigger audience.

You missed out my favourite bit - Tommo said that the event was in aid of two charities - one was for Alzheimer's, and as he paused, I said "And I can't remember what the other one was". Leon accused me of being worse than him.
