Shineback teaser trailer #1

Memory House #1 - Shineback video blog Sept 2011

As mentioned in another thread on the forum, Iím currently putting together my first solo collection of music under the project name Shineback. I havenít said anything very detailed about it thus far as I didnít really want to take attention away from the last stages of the Big Red Tour but I thought the time had come to let people know what has been brewing in the pot up here in The Crows Nest these past few months (or indeed, years).

Shineback is basically a studio project which Iíve created to help clear out the dusty cupboards of all the interesting little songs and tunes that couldnít find a place in the Tinyverse and also a forum to do a little sonic R&D (much like King Crimson does with The Projekts) without viciously violating the musical sensibilities of the other band members.

Some of the songs were submitted for The Big Red Spark but were felt to be not really suitable either in style or sound, others were simply underdeveloped tunes which I have been steadily working upon in the background during quiet moments in order to test some of the more esoteric limits of both Pro Tools and myself.

This particular project has a much more electronic/cinematic sound but still retains a healthy progressive edge to it (that part will always remain very important to me). I thought that both the electronic and the cinematic elements of The Big Red Spark deserved a little more creative investigation and so Shineback will be pushing a little further into these areas to see if there is anything useful I can bring back to Tinyfish for the next record.

Let me just say that the next Tinyfish album as an entity will not be affected in the least by this solo stuff but there are a number of technical and compositional elements I wish to try out using Shineback first to see if they work before I risk employing them on the next ĎFishes album (the Fart sounds need work you see).

Iím currently more or less 90% there with the material which is why Iím mentioning it now. I intend to post a few bits and bobs somewhere out there (probably on Soundcloud or YouTube) for people to listen to fairly soon.

More updates as they happen.

UPDATE: September 2012

The Shineback Q&A.

Q. Why does it take so long for you to produce an album?

A. I am in inveterate fiddler. Iíve always believed that the devil is in the detail and if there is detail to be found, you can be sure that Iíll be up to my neck in it. In doing so, I like to take my time with projects, especially when attempting to break new creative ground and the Shineback album is something I would most certainly classify as a record which is reaching into areas previously unsullied by prog.

Q. You keep breaking studio computers. Why is that?

A. I hate them and they hate me.

Q. Are you playing all the instruments yourself?

A. All of the great music on the album is played by me. All the rubbish and difficult stuff is played by musicians such as Matt Stevens (The Fierce And The Dead), Dec Burke (The Dec Burke Band/Frost*/Darwins Radio), Hen Rogers (DeeExpus/Touchstone), Andy Ditchfield (DeeExpus) and Hywel Bennett (The Dec Burke Band). These musicians represent the finest talent Prog has to offer for the price of a pint of larger and a packet of cheese and onion crisps.

Q. What is the title of the Shineback album and is there a story behind it?

A. The title of the album is Rise Up Forgotten, Return Destroyed and yes there is a story. Itís about a young, very disturbed woman called Dora who takes a video camera into her dreams and records what she sees.

Q. Is it another bloody concept album?

A. Yes it bloody is; very bloody.

Q. Is it a prog album?

A. I think it is but I have a very warped sense of what constitutes a prog album. Itís not a 1970s prog album however. Of that you can be very sure.

Q. This album is to be the first release through a new label called BEM (Bad Elephant Music). Is that correct?

A. Yes, it's run by two really shady characters called David Elliot (who hosts The European Perspective Progressive Rock podcast) and James Allen (who doesnít). They are really hard bastards and many a prog act has been Ďdisappearedí by their heavies. I do exactly what Iím told because they scare the living crap out of me.

Q. When will the album be released?

A. That is a question for BEM and be polite when you ask. My guess would be the first part of 2013.

Q. Will there be another Tinyfish album?

A. Yes. It will be terribly good; or maybe just terrible. We havenít decided yet.

Sounds excellent Simon - I'll look forward to listening to it - and of course, I'll put in a pre-order as well.

Cos it's like Nickelback, but it sounds shinier.
