Only just seen this thread -
- Obviously, it's difficult to insinuate yourself into a band full of people who have known each other for almost as long as I've been alive. When I first joined, there were loads of in-jokes & references that I didn't understand (observe part 2 of the Tinyfish documentary, when "Leicester Square Heroes" is mentioned, for example). Of course, I now know that the entire Prog community that Tinyfish is a part of runs in this manner. It's sort of like The Masons, right down to the middle-aged, bearded weirdos :-)
Having said this, I felt right at home pretty much straight away, both in terms of personalities, & my playing. It's awesome to be a musical member of the band, as opposed to just the drummer - a lot of the bands I've seen, since joining, have had drummers that are either incapable of musicality, or stifled by the classic Neo-Prog bollocks of "block chords, 4-on-the-floor, leave room for a guitar solo & wanky vocals". I would like to go on record by saying that Al Melville of Touchstone & Henry Rogers of DeeExpus are notable exceptions to this rule.
I did leave Tinyfish, briefly. This was purely down to geography, money & time. I didn't have time or funds to commit to driving to South London/Leatherhead every weekend, which is what I felt was being expected of me. Fortunately, the guys found a way to circumnavigate these issues, for which I am grateful, & have probably never really told them this. Tinyfish is unlike any other band I am in; that's not to say that they are musically superior to any other project I'm involved in (& by Christ, there are a few). But they are at minimum on par with the rest of it, & totally different in sound, texture & fanbase. Without wanting to sound too big-headed, I consider myself unique among my peers, in the stratosphere Tinyfish dwell in. There might be better drummers, with bigger kits & more electronics, but there's nobody quite like me, & this is an incentive to stay, as much as any. The same, however, can be said for all 5 of us. Find me a frontman with the sound or vision of Godfrey, a bassist as fluid & lyrical as Worwood, a lead guitarist with the unique blend of twiddle power & emotion as Sanders, or ANYONE like Rambo, & I'll show you a Tinyfish tribute act. I'm very proud to be in this band.
The future, I believe, sees me involved more deeply with Tinyfish. Now I don't have a "day job", as such, my time restraints are lifted. & if I get a little more work coming through the door, my money worries will be over, too. I would like to play on Tinyfish's third album, & it is also my ambition to get at least one song written (or co-written) that makes it onto the album. Big talk, given the second album doesn't exist yet :-)
Here's to the future.
